Monday - 7th of July 1997
early in the morning the people, a truck an a crane arrive. We are Teresa, tOmi, marCo, Carlos, Vali, Robert, Herbert, Hasi, Klaus, the truckdrivers and Roland (who brought the tent later in the afternoon). Herbert from the firm KAUFMANN, which did the wooden construction, is the foreman - he did the montage also in Hannover, when KAUFMANN used the NAVE as a fair stand (that was the sponsordeal with them). 8 hours - hundreds of people watching the process - we got the NAVE on its legs! we're like drunk from the work, happy and tired, but full of Lust to put the tent, which will protect our further work from rain and sun.
In the evening Katherina arrives - she'll help us the next days.
Tuesday - 8th of July
we (today we're only Teresa, tOmi, marCo, Robert, Katherina and Vali) install the motor for the stairway and the air-condition, but nothing works. We're very surprised that all the people react so positively. "what will it be when its finished" is the question we hear hundreds of times every day. The dancers from New York, which pass by on their way to work (they'll inaugurate Porgy and Bess on the Lake-Stage in 10 days) are shy people; they don't talk to us. We install the two Boomerang tables for the computers.
Wednesday - 9th of July
We work again with the stair- and air-condition-problems. #!!¤%$¤!! Finally it all works! the stairs a going up and down now super elegant, slowly and without any sound (we use a garage-door -motor). So many people are watching the work and asking the same question that we decide to write down the answer...500 copies are gone in the evening. We start to put the silk screen.
Thursday - 10th of July
"UFO, Coffee-bean, American football, Egg, Concrete mix-machine, Beagle and Wale" are the top7 names passers-by give to NAVE.
We continue to put the silk-screen. Its much easier than we thought. Werner, Wolfi and Hannes come to install the 18 Neon lamps above NAVE«s floor. marCo arrives with the two red surfboard-benches we made for NAVE.
We rent a little garage from "neighbours" to put all materials and tools over the night.
Friday - 11th of July
We finish to put NAVE«s skin. It worked very well and very schnell. Today we are Teresa, tOmi, Hannes, marCo and Katherina. Like every evening Baschi is passing by to help us - today he invites us to a great dinner. we drink and laugh and talk a lot.
Saturday and Sunday
We (Teresa, tOmi and Malex) go programming the NAVEsite.. Egon -.the System manager from the technical university in Dornbirn - is very friendly and gives us a key for the schoolhouse, so we can work whenever we want.
Monday - 14th of July
Markus and Martin, two carpenters, come to help us making wooden frames for the place where the steel legs touch the silk screen. We start to put the tension varnish. The stuff stinks like hell - 90% alcohol«- but it dries quickly. We realise that some people are coming every day to watch the progress of NAVE«s installation. above all older men and children, tramps and other hanging-around-people.
