Imagery of skateboarding with a dog under palm trees, wild water rafting, motocrossing through untouched nature, and powering across a blue ocean on a jet ski.... Peter Fischli has selected stills for KUB Billboards from his video Work (2018), which is on display on the ground floor, as part of his exhibition at Kunsthaus Bregenz. The source material purports to be authentic GoPro user videos, the action video camera company making as if these had been provided by real users. Whereas, in fact, Fischli filmed these short sequences on his own cell phone and re-edited them; his interest being “in the work of leisure.” His work imitates the real GoPro videos that are used for the promotional purposes of such cameras, as well as providing a source of inspiration for other users. Fischli demonstrates how the authentic, the real, is able to merge with the inauthentic, the counterfeit, and vice versa, how the archetypal and stereotypical are susceptible to intermingling.
The billboards located on Seestraße, the main thoroughfare in Bregenz, are an integral part of Kunsthaus Bregenz’s program, extending each KUB exhibition into public space.
