Anfang Gut. Alles Gut.
16 | 07 – 16 | 10 | 2011
The Futurist opera Victory over the Sun, which received its premiere at the Lunapark Theater in St. Petersburg in 1913, attempted to “create a collective work based on language, painting, and music.” Its authors – the poets Velimir Khlebnikov and Aleksei Kruchenykh, the composer and painter Michail Matjuschin, and the painter Kazimir Malevich – wished to construct an “anti-harmonious” work against the current of their time. This was in Czarist Russia in the years between industrial modernization and peasant ser fdom and after the attempted revolution of 1905. While in their enthusiasm for technology the Italian Futurists had already glorified machinery before World War I and brought it to bear against people, Russian Futurism took off from an idea of the future that seemed possible only by fundamentally deconstructing the as yet scarcely industrialized present.
Anfang gut. Alles gut. is the long-term project of an evergrowing group of currently forty international artists, musicians, architects, and writers who are picking up the threads of the past and actualizing them. Since 2008 those involved have drawn on the historical text and documentations of its performances as well as the opera’s reception history to develop formats translating the almost 100- year-old material in contemporary forms into the present. To begin with, the producers selected individual aspects of the opera, such as characters, costumes, stage set, text, music, or lighting and made them the starting point for their own artistic explorations.
The exhibition at the KUB Arena from July–October 2011 shows the actualizations and/or new productions that arose above all during a one-month exhibition and event series at the basso Berlin in May 2011. In addition to presenting all the works hitherto produced – texts, installations, photographs, drawings, and compositions – an extensive accompanying program with performances, lectures, and workshops creates the opportunity to further explore the historical material in dialogue with the works and to grasp the contemporary relevance of Russian Futurism, its potential and its hazards.
The project Anfang gut. Alles gut. confronts the past with a present where nostalgia for revolutionary times is à la mode in high culture, exposing generally unfulfi lled political aims. Looking back to the Futurist opera Victory over the Sun is thus not looking back on a heroic event, for it did not herald the revolution four years before its provisional success. Rather the prerevolutionary Futurism the opera expresses is translated into the post-revolutionary mass-cultural present, where the clear outlines of artistic movements have long since ceased to be unambiguously discernible. Against this background Anfang gut. Alles gut. amalgamates individual artworks to explore the disharmonies of the Futurist original without staging it as a nostalgic glorification.

Devin Fore (New York):
“All is well that begins well and has no end”: Primitive Accumulation and Metabiosis in the work of Dziga Vertov (english)
2.30 pm — 3 pm
While Victory Over the Sun may seem to promise a radical break with the imperialist past and with traditional aesthetic forms, this caesura is undermined repeatedly in the opera by the return of revenant figures from pre-revolutionary society. But this does not necessarily condemn the revolution to failure. Through a reading of Dziga Vertov's film The Eleventh Year, this talk explores Khlebnikov's idea of the “metabiotic community,” a form of relationality and intimacy that forges bonds of solidarity between subjects across generations and history.
Discussion (engl.) / Pause
3 pm— 4.30 pm
Christiane Ketteler (Autorin, Übersetzerin und Lehrerin für Deutsch, Berlin):
Political Art or Art as Politics - some Remarks via Trotzki (german)
4.30 pm — 5 pm
Marina Vishmidt (Autorin, PhD Researcher, London):
“The world is like a hole and the hole itself is not hollow” - Abstraction as Allegory in Art and Finance (english)
5 pm — 5.30 pm
Drawing on the passages on art, finance and the developments in real abstraction which correlate them from texts co-produced with Anthony Iles in the past year and a half, I would like to focus on the “mimetic allegories” between the crisis of representation indexed in Russian futurism - political, social, semantic, ontological - and the unrepresentability of finance, perhaps specifically in 'representations of crisis' in recent art production. Since art and finance are in different ways, both technologies of representation of capital, how do we track crises, be it in the forms of representation, the underlying “system” or the relation of representation itself?
Discussion (english)
5.30 pm — 6.30 pm
Avigail Moss (Künstlerin, London):
o.T. (untitled) (english)
6.30 pm — 7 pm
"It turns out that between a given point and a straight line, one can draw several perpendiculars."
So goes one of the final sentences in Viktor Shklovsky's 1923 book, Zoo: ili, Pis'ma ne o l'ubvi (Zoo; or, Letters Not about Love, or the New Heloise).
A telling line for a book little concerned with linearity…

2 pm — 2.45 pm
Anatole Kopp's Buch Town and Revolution erschien 1967 in Paris. Auf einer Zeitschiene läge es etwa in der Mitte zwischen heute und der Premiere von Victory over the Sun. Einer seiner Protagonisten, der Architekt Ivan Leonidov, begann in den 1920er Jahren als Entwerfer von revolutionären Gemeinschaftsgebäuden und arbeitete später über viele Jahre an einer utopischen Stadt namens “City of the Sun“.
Robert Burghardt (Architekt, Berlin) / Kerstin Stakemeier (Kunsthistorikerin, Berlin):
Modernism the Allmighty. (Einige) Modernismen diskutiert als Prinzipien der Zeitgenossenschaft
2.45 pm — 3.15 pm
Discussion (english)
3.15 pm — 4 pm

Speculations, potentially unrealized commerce (english)
4 pm — 4.30 pm
We will somehow humanise the positions into which we are being assimilated, the positions of an avant-garde art movement. Now we are trying to buy our way out of it by occasionally making androgynous purchases.

The Empty Plan (english)
6 pm — 7 pm
Shifting between documentary, historical actualisation and melodrama, The Empty Plan (HD video, 78 mins, 2010) interrogates the relationship between theory and practice in the theatre of Bertolt Brecht. Exploring different modes of performance and their relation to changing historical and political circumstances the film raises questions about the nature of art and the unrealised dream of its supersession through revolutionary practice.
