KUB Billboards
Cyprien Gaillard

For the first time, Cyprien Gaillard is presenting new, large-scale collages on the KUB Billboards. Gaillard collects original prints of historical press photos from the holdings of defunct American newspaper archives. The images depict acts of vandalism and incivility, criminal incidents, but also calamities such as natural disasters. Placed inside empty LP sleeves, the images are symbolically framed by the music, and the hole in the center of the paper becomes a window onto the photographed scenes. Gaillard thus refers to one of the key themes of his KUB exhibition: “deterrents”–measures designed to deter people in public spaces, and which, in some cases, include music.
The Billboards on Bregenz's Seestrasse, the city's busiest street, are an integral part of the KUB program, extending the current exhibition into public space.
