Augenblicke – Gesichter einer Reise

Agnès Varda & JR, 2017, France, OmdU, FSK 6, 90 min.

The 89-year-old directing icon Agnès Varda and the 33-year-old street artist JR travel through France in their mobile photo studio, creating larger-than-life portraits of people and their stories on façades, trains, and shipping containers. With remarkable lightness, the Oscar‑nominated documentary tells of the moving encounters along their journey and the tender friendship that develops between the two artists.

A Real Pain

Jesse Eisenberg, 2024, USA/Poland, OmdU, FSK 12, 90 min.

The audience favorite of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival tells the turbulent story of cousins David and Benji, who travel from New York to Poland to explore their family history. The trip is a gift from their late grandmother, a Holocaust survivor. As the two very different characters journey through the country with a tour group, visiting sites of Jewish life and the Holocaust, their own tensions and conflicts come to the surface. By turns humorous and unsettling, the film explores questions of identity and the impact of transgenerational trauma.

Hit the Road

Panah Panahi, 2021, Iran, OmdU, FSK 12, 93 min.

A family of four—dog, children, and all—sets off in a rental car on a seemingly aimless journey through the vast landscapes of northern Iran. Pop songs are sung, stories are told, stops are made along the way. But the longer the trip lasts, the more clearly the tension within the family begins to surface. In this striking debut, director Panah Panahi, son of filmmaker Jafar Panahi, demonstrates a keen sense for both absurd situational comedy and powerful dramatic moments.

Driving Mum

Hilmar Oddsson, 2022, Iceland/Estonia, OmdU, FSK 12 (DE/CH), 112 min.

Jón’s life is shaped by his mother—even beyond her death. To fulfill her last wish to be buried in her home village, he sets off on the road with her body in his old Ford Cortina. Along the way, he encounters a wide range of people, prompting Jón to question his life and gradually free himself from his mother’s hold. A wonderfully quirky road movie infused with a generous dose of dark humor.
